Split System Air Conditioning: What is it and How Does it Work?

There are many different types of air conditioning systems. We are sure you have heard about portable air conditioning, central air conditioning and in this case, we are going to go through all the information you should know about split air conditioning systems.

What is Split system air conditioning?

The split air-con system is one of the most bought types of air conditioning available on the market and one of the most widely used today in private homes.

The split air conditioner consists of an outdoor unit known as the condenser, which is installed on the facade or on the balcony of the house and an indoor unit called the evaporator that cools the air.

To install the indoor unit of a split air conditioner it is necessary to drill the wall to connect the pipes with those of the outdoor unit and install a drain. The installation of this type of air conditioner is easy, but not advisable to perform if you are not a certificated air conditioning technician.

How does split air conditioning work?

A split air conditioner separates the hot and cold sides of the system as follows:

The cold side, made up of an expansion valve and an evaporator, is placed inside a unit that is commonly known as a console. This unit is installed in the environment to be air-conditioned.

The hot side, known as the condensing unit, is on the outside of the building. The unit consists of a cylinder-shaped spiral tube heat exchanger. Inside the exchanger, there is an air blowing fan, a weather-resistant compressor and a control system.

This system has evolved over the years as it has a low cost and also promotes noise reduction inside the house.

On the other hand, in buildings, shopping centres, and in other businesses, the condensing unit is usually on the roof. However, there can also be smaller units on the roof, each connected to the interior of the building by separate consoles, which cools a specific area of the building.

What is a multi-split system?

Multi-split air conditioners work in the same way as split air conditioners, but the main difference relies on how many indoor units can be installed.

Inside the house, up to eight indoor units can be installed in different rooms, allowing the temperature to be regulated in each of them independently. In addition, it is possible to place different types of units in each room according to the needs: wall unit, cassette type or ceiling.

What are the advantages of split air conditioning?

It is silent

As we already said, the split system is divided into two units: the condenser, which is installed outside, and the evaporator, which is inside which means you won’t hear the noises as they will stay outside.

Great Variety of Sizes

With capacities ranging from 7,000 to 80,000 BTUs, split air conditioners are perfect for homes of different sizes.

Energy saving

If you are looking to save energy while keeping comfortable in the summer then you should consider acquiring a split system. If you compare a split and a window air conditioner with the same load capacity, the split will save up to 25% of the energy consumed, doing the same work.

This number increases dramatically with the implementation of Inverter Technology, reaching even 60%.

Practicality

Split air conditioning units uses little space at home and the hole you must do in the wall for the  installation is smaller compared to other types of air conditioners. No major damage is done to your wall and also maintenance is not as expensive as you may think.

If your home decoration is important for you and you are worried that a split air conditioner may disturb your home aesthetically then worry no more.

The design of a split does not affect your decoration in any way, moreover, split air cons are designed so they can also become an ornament while helping to create a pleasant atmosphere.

Split air conditioning types

Window Split Air Conditioner

It is a square box containing all the functional parts of the system. To install it, a hole must be made in the wall so that in this way one part of the device is located on the outside and the other half of the device is on the inside.

The installation of a window split air conditioner cost is low and the maintenance is really easy but they consume much more electricity compared to other split aircon types, however, it could be said that these types of air conditioners are in disuse.

Split wall air conditioner

These air conditioning systems are currently the ones that are being installed the most since the advantages are numerous in relation to the window ones. They are also usually cheaper. The unit in which the compressor is installed is located outside the building and it is connected to the indoor unit in which the evaporator-condenser is integrated.

The advantages of the split wall air conditioner are that they are not usually noisy and at the same time they are very aesthetic devices, especially if we look at the latest generation, and they are also easy to maintain.

However, the installation is usually more complicated than the installation of window air conditioners. For this reason, the cost of carrying out an installation is higher than other models. In addition, installing them in specific places can be difficult, as in the case that we want to do it in prefabricated walls.

Split Air Conditioner Floor-Ceiling Console

They have a higher capacity, compared to split wall air conditioners, but their operation is similar. When talking about the installation, we must mention that it is more expensive and complex.

The advantage of the split console ceiling air conditioner is that they have a larger capacity that ranges from 36,000 to 60,000 BTUs, and therefore highly recommended for bigger places.
